Barrie Queens Park Road Closures

Barrie: Major Road Closures Around Queens Park for Reconstruction

Historic Neighbourhood Upgrades Start June 24

Construction to Begin in Queens Park Area
Beginning June 24, the Queens Park neighbourhood in downtown Barrie will enter a major construction phase as part of the City’s Historic Neighbourhoods Strategy. The project focuses on renewing aging infrastructure while improving long-term safety, drainage, and road conditions in one of Barrie’s most established residential areas.

The work includes upgrades to watermains, sanitary sewers, storm sewers, and road surfaces, along with the relocation of the Sophia Creek culvert. City officials have noted that much of the existing infrastructure in this area has reached the end of its service life, making these improvements necessary to support the neighbourhood for decades to come.

While construction activity will cause temporary disruption, the project is intended to reduce future service interruptions, improve stormwater management, and enhance overall road safety for residents, pedestrians, and cyclists.

Details of Road Closures
To accommodate construction and ensure safety, several road closures will be in effect throughout the project timeline.

  • Ross Street and Sophia Street Intersection
Ross Street will be closed between Toronto Street and Mary Street from June 24 until August 5, 2024.
  • Sophia Street West, Mary Street, Maple Avenue Closures
Sophia Street West between Ross Street and Bayfield Street, Mary Street between Wellington Street West and Ross Street, and Maple Avenue between Wellington Street West and Ross Street will be closed from June 24 until December 31, 2024.

Residents in the affected areas will continue to have access to their homes, and the City has confirmed that emergency services will be able to navigate the construction zones at all times. Detour routes will be clearly marked to help manage traffic flow during the closures.

Transit, Access, and Neighbourhood Impacts
Barrie Transit routes serving the Queens Park area will be adjusted during construction. Commuters and residents who rely on public transit are encouraged to review route changes in advance to avoid delays. Updated transit information is available at

For homeowners and buyers, projects like this can temporarily affect access and parking but often contribute to long-term neighbourhood value by modernizing infrastructure and improving streetscapes. Buyers considering downtown Barrie locations may wish to factor construction timelines into short-term planning while keeping long-term improvements in mind.

Stay Informed
The City of Barrie encourages residents to monitor official updates as timelines may shift due to weather or construction conditions. Details on this and other municipal road projects can be found at
