Behind Every SOLD Sign: The Business Most People Never See
A recent online purchase arrived with a simple thank you card tucked inside the package. It thanked me for supporting a small business and reminded me that behind every purchase is a real person, a family, years of hard work and a dream that someone chose to pursue.
It made me stop and think.
Not about what I had purchased, but about my own business.
I don’t think we talk enough about what it really means to build a business. I can only speak for myself, but real estate has never been “just a job.” It has been my full-time business for more than two decades.
Consumers often see the SOLD signs, listings, social media posts and happy possession day photos. Television has also created a perception of the industry through reality shows filled with luxury homes, dramatic negotiations and oversized commission cheques. They’re entertaining, but they are not an accurate reflection of what building a successful real estate business actually looks like.
Behind every transaction are years of learning, planning, investment, continuing education, marketing, administration, financial risk and thousands of hours of work that clients never see. That’s the part of the story I wanted to share.
The Road Before Real Estate
Before becoming a REALTOR®, I built a career across several industries. I worked in technical support, web design and coding, human resources, marketing, customer service management for a timeshare organization and as a Court Services Clerk with the Ministry of the Attorney General, Sheriff’s Office.
Each position taught me something different. Some strengthened my communication skills. Others challenged me to think strategically, solve problems, understand people, manage conflict or embrace technology long before it became commonplace in many industries.
Looking back, I don’t see those experiences as separate careers. I see them as the foundation of the business I would eventually build.
At the same time, I was raising children as a single mother.
The challenge wasn’t the work itself. I genuinely enjoyed working and learning. The challenge was trying to fit my family into schedules that were built around an employer’s operational needs rather than the realities of raising children.
I worked afternoon shifts that meant arriving home after my children were asleep. I worked mid-day shifts where I still missed dinner and bedtime. Even when I worked a traditional 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. schedule, I left before they woke up and, after the commute home, arrived with just enough time for hugs, kisses goodnight and lights out.
I wasn’t searching for another job. I was searching for a different way to build a life.
An Opportunity to Build Something Meaningful
Real estate presented me with that opportunity.
Not because it was easy, and certainly not because it promised quick success. It offered me the chance to build something of my own using every skill I had developed throughout my career.
Marketing helped me understand positioning and communication. Human resources strengthened my ability to work with people. Technical support taught me patience and problem-solving. Web design and coding gave me an appreciation for technology and innovation. Customer service reinforced the importance of relationships, while my experience with the Ministry taught me professionalism, accountability and process.
None of those experiences were wasted. Together, they became the foundation of the business I have today.
Real estate also gave me something I had never truly experienced before: greater control over my time.
That didn’t mean working less. If anything, I worked more. Evenings, weekends, holidays, continuing education, marketing, networking, administration, paperwork and client care became part of everyday life.
The difference was that when one of my children had a school concert, a doctor’s appointment, a sporting event or another milestone, I could often adjust my schedule and make those moments a priority before returning to work later. As a single mother, that flexibility was life changing.
This Is a Business
One of the biggest misconceptions about real estate is that people think REALTORS® simply sell homes.
In reality, many of us are entrepreneurs operating full-time businesses.
We are responsible for finding clients, investing in marketing, maintaining our education, paying licensing fees, carrying insurance, purchasing technology, managing finances, building systems, developing relationships and continually improving how we serve the people who place their trust in us.
There is no guaranteed salary. There are no paid vacations or paid sick days. Sometimes weeks or months of work never lead to a completed transaction. That uncertainty is simply part of running a business.
I can only speak for myself, but I have never viewed this profession as simply selling homes. It has always been about helping people make informed decisions during some of the biggest financial and personal moments of their lives.
Success Has Always Meant Something Different to Me
Real estate often celebrates rankings, production numbers and awards. I respect those accomplishments, but they have never been what motivates me.
I have never set out to become number one.
My goal has always been to take my skills, continue learning, improve every year and be of genuine service to the people who trust me with one of life’s biggest decisions.
If someone walks away feeling informed, protected and confident, I consider that a successful outcome.
That has always mattered more to me than where I rank on a list.
Watching the Next Generation
One of the things that makes me smile today is watching my daughter build her own career in real estate.
She grew up witnessing what it actually took to build this business. She saw the long hours, the commitment, the responsibility and the relationships that were built over time. She also chose to explore her own path first, working in other industries and successfully operating her own business before deciding to become a REALTOR®.
That means a great deal to me because her decision wasn’t based on what she saw on television or social media. She knew exactly what this profession required, and she chose it anyway.
As a parent, that is something I am incredibly proud of.
Thank You
If you have ever chosen to work with me, referred a friend or family member, shared one of my content, recommended my business or simply encouraged me over the years, thank you.
You may have thought you were choosing a REALTOR®, but you were also choosing to support a local, woman-owned small business.
Your trust helped me build a business that allowed me to provide for my family while being present for moments I once thought I would always miss.
It also allowed me to build something that has grown far beyond myself. Because of your support, I have been able to give back to my community, advocate for causes that matter deeply to me, mentor others, continue learning, create opportunities for my family and wake up every day doing work that I genuinely love.
Every client, every referral, every recommendation and every conversation has become part of that story.
Twenty-two years later, I still don’t take that trust for granted. I probably never will.
Thank you for allowing me to build a business doing work I truly love. It is a privilege I appreciate every single day.
