Georgian College’s Expansion Set to Transform Downtown Barrie

New Hub for Creative Programming to Attract 800 Students by 2025

Major Announcement for Downtown Barrie
Georgian College will introduce up to 800 post-secondary students to downtown Barrie starting in 2025, marking a transformative investment for the city. The announcement was made at 55 Mulcaster St., within the Barrie City Centre building, a partnership between local businessmen Dino Melchoir and Jamie Massie.

Impact on the Community
“This investment today will change our city forever,” said Massie, emphasizing the significant influence these students will have on the community. The introduction of a new hub for creative programming, encompassing design, visual arts, and innovative technologies, aims to offer students hands-on learning, collaborative partnerships, and immersive experiences.

Anticipated Growth and Opportunities
While specific programs and services are still being finalized, Georgian College plans to provide updates in the fall. This new downtown presence will enable students to live, work, and study in various neighbourhoods, fostering a more integrated and vibrant community.

Excitement from Local Leaders
Barrie Mayor Alex Nuttall expressed his excitement: “This is a city-making, change-making day, one that we’ll look back in years and say that’s where we turned the corner. Eight hundred young people going to our shops in downtown, learning for the future, getting other skills, their trades in downtown, being able to visit our vibrant waterfront.”

Strengthening Community Ties
Kevin Weaver, Georgian College president and CEO, highlighted the college’s ongoing commitment to downtown Barrie. “We’re excited to strengthen our contributions to the social and economic vibrancy of downtown Barrie,” he said, noting the college’s significant role as the largest tenant in Barrie City Centre.

Comprehensive Educational Offerings
Georgian College offers more than 130 apprenticeship and post-secondary credentials, including certificates, diplomas, advanced diplomas, degrees, and graduate certificates. The institution celebrated surpassing 100,000 graduates last fall, a testament to its impact on education and the community.
